Hello, packing for a trip combining high-altitude regions (Nepal/Bhutan) and hot regions (India) requires careful planning to ensure your luggage is both lightweight and able to cope with sudden temperature changes.
Below is a detailed checklist to help you prepare:
1. Documents and Finances (Most Important)
-
Passport: Valid for more than 6 months (a photocopy or photo saved on your phone is recommended).
-
Passport photos: Bring 4-6 photos (4x6 or 3.5x4.5 cm) for SIM card registration or on-site procedures if needed.
-
Visa: Nepal, Bhutan, and India (stamped or printed e-visa).
-
Cash: Exchange USD in advance (new bills, not torn or crumpled). Divide your money into smaller amounts and keep them in different places.
-
Itinerary & Hotel Information: Print out to present upon entry.
2. Attire (The "Classroom" principle)
Since you'll be traveling from a cold region (Nepal/Bhutan) to a hot region (India), wear multiple layers to make it easier to take off and put on clothes.
For high-altitude regions (Nepal/Bhutan - Temperatures may drop):
-
Warm jacket: Lightweight, waterproof/windproof down jacket.
-
Heattech shirt: Very important for early mornings and nights.
-
Scarf, wool hat, gloves: Protect your neck and head to avoid heatstroke.
-
Thick socks: Keep your feet warm while sleeping and hiking.
For hot regions (India - Mumbai/Aurangabad):
-
Cotton or linen t-shirt/shirt: Excellent sweat absorption.
-
Comfortable long pants: Avoid wearing shorts or short skirts when entering Buddhist caves or temples.
-
Scarf or thin shawl: For sun protection in India and for light covering on the plane..
3. Footwear
-
Hiking/Mountaineering Shoes: Good grip for climbing Tiger's Nest and hiking in Ajanta/Ellora Caves.
-
Lightweight Sandals: For use at the hotel or for short walks.
-
Socks: Bring several pairs to change, preferably non-slip socks..
4. Medicine and Healthcare
-
Specific medications: If you are being treated for a specific medical condition.
-
Altitude sickness medication (Acetazolamide/Diamox): Essential for Nepal/Bhutan.
-
Digestive medications: Probiotics, anti-diarrheal medication (essential when traveling to India).
-
Cold and fever medication, pain relievers, bandages.
-
Vitamin C/Effervescent tablets: To boost immunity.
-
Hand sanitizer & face masks: To protect against dust and pollution in crowded cities..
5. Personal items & Utilities
-
Sunscreen & Lip Balm: UV rays are very strong in mountainous areas.
-
Personal Water Bottle: For refilling water at the hotel (avoid using plastic bottles).
-
Power Bank: Ensures your phone always has battery for taking photos and communicating.
-
Universal Adapter: To fit different power outlets in the three countries.
-
Small Flashlight: Useful when navigating dark caves or areas without electricity.
6. Spiritual items (Optional)
-
Monastic robes/robes: Thin, lightweight, and modest.
-
Prayers, small prayer book.
-
Thin sleeping bag (Liner): If you are particular about your appearance when in remote areas.
Tip: You should divide your luggage into two parts: one main suitcase to check in and a small backpack to carry with you containing important items (documents, medicine, a light jacket).
